What is Max Pain?
Max pain is the strike price where option holders (buyers) lose the most money, and option sellers profit most. The theory suggests stock prices tend to gravitate toward this price as expiration approaches.
- Pain Curve: Shows total losses at each potential stock price at expiration
- Max Pain Strike: The strike price with minimum total pain (where sellers win most)
- Trading Strategy: Some traders fade moves away from max pain near expiration
- Market Makers: Large players may have incentive to move price toward max pain
Note: Max pain is a theoretical concept and should not be the sole basis for trading decisions. Always combine with other technical and fundamental analysis.
